Top 5 War Movies

Undoubtedly, one of the most popular film genres of all time, “movies about war” have been made since the dawn of film itself. Sometimes they are dumbed down to mindless action sequences, but some can be very powerful dramas. Here are a few picks for the best war films of all time.

Please Note: These movies definitely are not for kids.

1. Come and See (1985)

Come and See is widely regarded as one of, if not, the greatest film ever made, and you can easily see why. Very little can be said about a film of this magnitude and true power, other than it is an undeniable masterpiece. Come and See accurately depicts the true horrors of war, and shows that in the end there are no “winners”. It also shows what humans are capable of when given too much power, and the effect of those actions on others. Come and See is pretty tough to watch, but it is a very important film that shows a side of World War II that most people are oblivious to. It is a film truly unlike any other, and you will surely never forget it.

2. Apocalypse Now (1979)

Many films have been made about the Vietnam war, and Apocalypse Now is usually named as the best. The film has many staggering performances, but Martin Sheen and Marlon Brando steal every scene they are in. The cinematography is also shocking and impressive, and the use of music makes this film a true feat of cinema.

3. Ashes and Diamonds (1958)

Many people consider Popiół i diament (Ashes and Diamonds) to be the best Polish film of all time. Excellent characterization and acting, vivid cinematography, and clever writing all add up to a fantastic conclusion.

4. Paths of Glory (1957)

Stanley Kubrick returned to the war genre in 1957 with Paths of Glory, an excellent World War I film based on a true story. Paths of Glory is both an exciting action-packed war epic, and a carefully calculated courtroom drama, balancing both elements very nicely. Kirk Douglas is known for his range of acting talent, and it is on full display in Paths of Glory

5. Full Metal Jacket (1987)

Another Stanley Kubrick war movie, and another Vietnam war movie. Full Metal Jacket shows both sides of being in the army: boot camp and training, and combat in battle. While it does tonally jump from one half to the other, it still makes for an interesting and memorable watch.
