This year, the Hill County Fair held the first-ever Hill County Fair Commercial Steer Contest.
For this contest, exhibitors purchase and raise a pen of two or three steers, feed them out, keep a record book with all information about the steers (feed, vet bills, etc.), study and take an exam over cattle and beef industry knowledge, then present their two best steers with a speech about them and what they learned from the project and how it relates to the cattle industry. The steers are evaluated for their yield and grade then the exhibitors answer questions from the judges about their project. This contest teaches youth what goes into growing quality beef including feeding, feed quality, financial management, and much more.
