With Valentine’s Day coming up, I would like to tell more about the history, traditions, and the meaning behind this special holiday! Valentine’s Day began to take place back in the 18th century in England. Valentine’s Day came from ancient Roman and Christian traditions. Valentine’s Day originates from the Roman festival of Lupercalia. This festival was created to celebrate the Roman god of agriculture, and the founders of Rome. Valentine’s Day has history in the Christian tradition as well. According to the legend, Saint Valentine of Rome was a priest who performed secret marriages for young couples. At the time the Saint Valentine of Rome was disobeying the rules of Emperor Claudius II, who had prohibited young marriages. Eventually, Valentine was taken to prison and executed on February 14, 270 AD. A letter written by Valentine that he sent to the jailer’s daughter was found, signed “from your valentine” before he died. So, in honor of Saint Valentine, Valentine’s Day was named after him.
By the Middle Ages, Valentine’s Day was known to celebrate romantic love. The holiday quickly became known as a day to express love, care, and affection. Along with that, as many people know Cupid is associated with Valentine’s Day because of what it stands for. Cupid comes from Roman mythology, and he’s known to stand as the god of love. Cupid is a young boy who carries a bow and arrows, which he uses to strike at people to make them fall in love.
The most given gift on Valentine’s Day is chocolates! They come in many different flavors, decorated boxes, and usually paired with flowers. The most common flower given out on Valentine’s Day is roses. Roses are also the flower used to represent Valentine’s Day, specifically red roses. They symbolize romance, love, and passion. The most popular place to visit for Valentine’s Day is Paris, France since it is known as, “The City of Love!” Valentine’s Day is a very special holiday celebrated worldwide by many people looking to commemorate their loved ones with flowers, sweets, cards, and gifts!
