Top 5 Films of the 2010’s

The phrase “they don’t make ‘em like they used to” can certainly be applied to the state of cinema today. On the surface, it seems as though there is no original work being created, and streaming services rule the film landscape while theaters die off quietly. While this is the sad reality, the 2010’s did hold some excellent movies. Here are my top 5 picks for the best films made between 2010 and 2019.

1. Joker (2019) (Thriller/Crime)

A perfect central performance from Joaquin Phoenix and incredible writing and directing from Todd Phillips make Joker a modern classic and arguably one of the best of the decade. Beautiful dark, dungy color schemes and cinematography make Joker closely resemble films like Taxi Driver and Fight Club.

2. Call Me By Your Name (2017) (Drama/Romance)

The natural chemistry between Timothee Chalamet and Armie Hammer alone make this Italian romance film an emotional rollercoaster for anyone and everyone lucky enough to see it. Wonderfully written, shot, and directed, Call Me By Your Name is in my opinion one of the most beautiful films of all time.

3. Uncut Gems (2019) (Crime/Dark Comedy)

While he’s known mostly for his goofy comedy films, Adam Sandler’s first serious role is absolutely mesmerizing to watch. The Safdie brothers create a thrilling sense of stress while also adding comedic elements that build up to an ending unlike any other.

4. The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) (Drama/Comedy)

(NOT FOR KIDS)

Despite it’s 3 hour run time, The Wolf of Wall Street flies by due to it’s fast pacing and adrenaline inducing editing. Perfect performances all around and masterful directing by Martin Scorsese himself make The Wolf of Wall Street one of the most exciting and original films of all time.

5. Baby Driver (2017) (Action/Crime)

Edgar Wright’s first original script is brought to life in Baby Driver, a film with impeccable acting and even better music. Even after you know what happens, the rewatch value is endless.
