Debra Karen McCauley Scott was born on May 13th, 1952, in Hillsboro, Texas to Don E. McCauley and Louise Sumner McCauley. She passed away peacefully on September 3, 2024, at her home in Itasca, Texas. Debra and her husband David Scott were married on July 15, 1972, in Lakewood, Washington. The two met at the church her father was pastoring, while David was serving as an Air Force pilot at McCord AFB. For the next 19 years Debra went with her Air Force husband all over the United States: Washington, Illinois, California, and Virginia. After David retired in 1991, they moved to Federal Way, Washington, where they stayed for 12 years. In 2003, Debra and David made their final move to Itasca, Texas.
Debra was known for her generosity, kindness, hospitality, and, most of all, her faith. She was a devoted servant of her Lord Jesus Christ, fervently praying for and encouraging others. Because of their moves, she and David were faithful members of various church bodies. Debra often worked with children, but, over the years, expanded to other ministries including small groups; counseling; missions work in Nepal, South Africa and Guam; and evangelistic outreach. She was also an associate pastor preaching and presiding over marriages and funerals in addition to the afore mentioned ministries. After moving to Itasca, Debra worked at the Elementary and Middle Schools as an aide and an administrative assistant. She loved working with the students and serving the school. She was so appreciated in Middle School that David’s High School Algebra students often referred to him as Mrs. Scott’s husband.
Debra’s foremost passion was spending time with her family. She was always there to support those she loved providing help without a second thought. She ensured that each person was well cared for and relished cooking extraordinary meals and making her home as festive, fun, and joyous as possible for every holiday and birthday. She also loved traveling, especially to the beach. Galveston and Hawaii were her favorite places in the world. She would always say, “I feel most at home at the beach.”
Debra was preceded in death by her parents Don McCauley and Louise McCauley, and her Aunts Betty Sumner and Doris Sumner, Uncles Jack Sumner and Garvin Sumner, Cousin Jan Sumner Whitfield, and other beloved family members. She is survived by husband David Scott; Sisters Kathy Fowler and husband Brian Fowler, and Laurie Miles; Aunt Wanda Sumner; Cousin Hatton Sumner and wife Linda Sumner, and Diane Sumner Barnes and her husband Charles Ray Barnes; Nieces and nephews Brian Burdette, Timothy Burdette and wife Leana Burdette, Ashley Liscum and husband Chase Liscum, Kelsey Todd and husband Matt Todd, Tyler Fowler, Evan Fowler and wife Lena Fowler, Hannah Fowler, Lindsay Miles, and Jacob Miles; great nieces and nephews Sean Liscum, Noah Liscum, Theodore Liscum, Henry Todd, Lidiya Fowler, and Cameron Burdette.
