Hill County Precinct 4 Constable Kevin Cordell was awarded a 2025 Star of Texas Award by Governor Greg Abbott in Austin on Thursday, September 11th. Governor Abbott delivered the keynote address and presented awards to honor the service and sacrifice of peace officers, firefighters, and first responders at the awards ceremony. Constable Cordell was shot in the face in May 2021 while assisting in a pursuit of Dallas murder suspects that entered the county.
In 2003, House Bill 1937 created the Star of Texas Awards to honor and commemorate selected first responders who made profound commitments while performing their duties as peace officers, firefighters and emergency medical first responders. HB 1937 also designated September 11th of every year as Texas First Responders Day.
Each September, the Public Safety Office has the honor of hosting the Star of Texas Awards. During this event, the Governor presents medals to honorees and family members of peace officers, firefighters, and emergency first responders who are killed or suffer serious injury in the line of duty. Since the awards began in 2003, over 734 brave Texans have been honored.
The Star of Texas Awards honor all Texas peace officers, firefighters, emergency medical first responders, and federal law enforcement officers who are seriously injured or killed in the line of duty. Private Citizens who were seriously injured or killed while aiding or attempting to aid a peace officer, firefighter, or emergency first responder in the performance of their duties are also eligible to receive a Star of Texas Award.

We are proud to call him one of our own, and truly admire the qualities of character, servant leadership, and love for others that he stands for. Congratulations Kevin Cordell!
