Yearbook and journalism programs play a vital role in shaping students into thoughtful communicators, leaders, and storytellers. These programs go far beyond simply taking photos or writing articles; they teach responsibility, collaboration, time management, and the power of capturing moments that matter. Through journalism, students learn how to ask meaningful questions, seek truth, and present information with integrity. Through yearbook, they preserve the history of our school, ensuring that every student has a place in the story.
Our program is also a pillar of the community. Throughout the Itasca ISD district, our students are present at games, performances, and special events with camera in hand -capturing memories, smiles, and moments that might otherwise be forgotten. They help tell the story of our community, highlighting the pride, spirit, and connection that make it so special. In doing so, they are not just documenting events; they are creating a lasting legacy.
For many students, yearbook and journalism have become more than just a class, but a place where they belong. Some have discovered a true passion for photography, finding an outlet where they can express their creativity and develop skills that will stay with them for a lifetime. These programs give students the opportunity to see the world through a different lens, both literally and figuratively.
Our UIL journalism team is a testament to the impact of these programs. Since 2022, our team has advanced to regionals every single year, demonstrating not only talent but also consistency, discipline, and a commitment to excellence. These students have worked tirelessly to hone their skills, support one another, and represent our school with pride.
For me, this program is deeply personal. I have taught most of these students since their freshman year, and watching them grow into confident, capable individuals has been one of the greatest joys of my career. They each hold a special place in my heart, and I know I will never have another staff quite like this one. Together, we have built something meaningful, something that reflects their hard work, creativity, and dedication.
My letter to the seniors will come later, though I already know it will be one of the hardest things for me to write.
This program has grown because of them. My staff. Their passion and perseverance have shaped it into what it is today. I owe so much to their commitment and effort, and I am endlessly proud of all they have accomplished.
