We would like to recognize Tatum Abrego for this week’s Athlete Spotlight! This year, Tatum Abrego was named All-District MVP for the 2025-2026 basketball season. Tatum has had some great moments, memories, and highlights throughout her junior year basketball season.
Tatum had two game-winning buzzer beaters this season! In Itasca’s game against Rio Vista, she got the rebound and dribbled the ball all the way down the court and made a jump shot, winning the game. In Itasca’s game against Crawford, she got the rebound, dribbled the ball all the way down the court, shot the ball, and fell, but ended up making the layup, winning the game. At the Itasca Varsity Girls basketball game against Valley Mills, Tatum alone dropped 33 points! Overall, this season, Tatum has scored over 300 points.
Tatum has played sports all of her life. She started playing sports as soon as she was able to, which was about 5 years old. Tatum has played, and continues to play, volleyball, basketball, softball, and track and field. She says she has always enjoyed getting to play sports ever since she was little, but middle school is when her love and passion for sports grew more.
But among all sports, basketball is her favorite. When asked why basketball is her favorite, Tatum says, “I feel like I have put more time, effort, and energy into this sport. I have fun and enjoy the time I get to spend playing.” Basketball has challenged Tatum to push herself, and this season she proved that all of her hard work, dedication, and determination have paid off. Tatum’s advice for young athletes is, “Keep pushing through everything, and always believe in yourself.”
Receiving All-District MVP has been a goal of Tatum’s since middle school. She has always wanted to obtain that title in the sport she loves most, and she made that possible. Tatum would like to thank her family and friends for being the people who motivate her the most. Tatum says, “My family has always pushed me to be better. They’ve supported me and encouraged me to do my best in everything that I do.” When asked what her favorite memories from sports have been, Tatum said, “The funny moments my friends and I share in the locker room dancing and having fun together before and after games and practices, those are some of my most favorite times.”
Tatum is a great student as well; she maintains an A-B Honor Roll while participating in all the sports and extracurricular activities she is involved in. She is an all-around amazing student-athlete with a bright personality and a great attitude. We appreciate you here at Itasca High School, and we cannot wait to see what other amazing things you accomplish next year for your senior year!
